‘The Life of Saul Bellow: To Fame and Fortune, 1915-1964,’ by Zachary Leader

The very long first volume of Zachary Leader’s biography of Saul Bellow — a second book will cover the later years — ends in 1964, with the publication of “Herzog,” the novel that secured Bellow’s position, at age 49, as the more or less undisputed champ of midcentury American fiction.
